karelaa, kapaDaa aur makaan
Watching Naram Garam yesterday was cathartic after having subjected myself to so much sub-standard trash from the 21st century Bollywood machines. I guess watching Jhankaar Beats gave me a strong reason to grab one of the old HM nuggets. This is vintage middle-class comedy with Amol Palekar as Ramprasad, Utpal Dutt as Bhavani Shankar Bajpayee (which got him the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian), Shatrughan Sinha as Kali Shankar "Babua" Bajpayee, Swaroop Sampat as Kusum, Dina Pathak as UD's mother in law, Kiran Vairale as UD's daughter Sumi (and her late mother), along with great support from Javed Khan (as Chandu), Nilu Phule, and Om Prakash (whose turn as a young-at-heart dupe pandit is quite reminiscent of his character as Sunil Dutt's uncle in Padosan). And great lines and moments, needless to say.
